2001 Crestliner 1850 Sport Fish Description
Boaters with growing families face a common dilemma. Dad may like fishing, Mom cruising, the kids watersports and everyone except Grandma wants to go fast. Ultimately, compromise is a factor, but there are lesser and greater degrees of it.
Crestliner’s roomy 1850 Sportfish is primarily for fishing. Powered by a Yamaha 150 HPDI outboard, it’s quick as a cat out of the hole, has a de-cent top-end speed, and runs smoothly and efficiently for casual day cruising. It will also pull tubers, skiers and wakeboarders all day — long everyone’s happy.
The bow section of the 1850 converts from a fishing platform to a family bowrider in a few seconds. Easily acces-sed from the cockpit through a 15"-wide walk-thru windshield panel, ample space is available for a swivel fishing chair or when converted, two jump seats.
Forward of the twin roto-molded consoles, a 20-gal. aerated livewell has been placed to port, and a storage compart-ment to starboard. On the port side of the cockpit, a panel drops to access rod-saver storage, while the starboard side has another large lockable compartment. The battery is mounted to centre below the aft casting deck, while the starboard aft corner is reserved for a 15-gal. stern livewell.
Four Pro-Form fishing chairs nicely fill the cockpit space, with seven bases included for a choice of lower or higher elevations.
The ABS vacuum-formed helm is raised for visibility, incorporating sun-shaded Faria instruments mounted on a brushed metallic panel. Colour-matched to trim and with a double-sized glovebox on the passenger’s console, the  boat is presented in classic shades of cream, camel and forest green, with gold highlighted trim and graphics.
Crestliner adamantly believes in welded aluminum seams. Their Tru-V rivet-free hull is backed by a 20-year warranty plus three-year bow-to-stern protection. An intricate stringer superstructure strengthens and supports the hull and sides, and balanced closed cell foam is used for floatation.
This Crestliner is a very quiet machine, as is the 150-hp Yamaha bolted to its Uni-Weld Hydro Tech transom. Aided by the massive wraparound windshield, this is a boat you can hear yourself think in.
Driven properly, the boat handles great. Acceleration is a rush. The 1850 planed in 2.09 seconds, and hit 40 mph in 6.22 seconds. Trimmed high, the beamy, reverse-chine hull floated free with minimal drag. Still, it reacted quickly to negative trim when setting for a turn, then steered and tracked cleanly throughout the corner.
The hull didn't pound, flex or bounce unnaturally when confronted with two-foot waves. It rarely jumped around unless trimmed too high in windy conditions. By this time, the torque on the steering wheel builds
and tells you to trim under a few degrees.
While Crestliner offers a true multi-purpose model called the Rampage, the fish-ability features of the Sportfish make it an obvious choice for serious anglers. The 1850 is based on a tried-and-true con-cept: “everything has its place."
