2001 Celebrity 180 Description
You gotta love a boat that’s quick out of the hole, accelerates like the wind and reacts instantly to flicks of the steering wheel. Celebrity’s peppy 18-foot bowrider does all this and more, powered by an economical 4.3-L, six-cylinder MerCruiser I/O.
While independent Celebrity Boats Corp. of Grand Mere, Que., is no longer owned by Bombardier, the boats still have world-class appeal. The 180 BR is curved in all the right places.
Celebrity’s bowrider layout maximizes storage opportunities. Every seat from the twin high-backed buckets to the forward bow cushions is integrated into the 180’s open-interior design. A spacious aft bench seats three, and is split in two for easy access to storage compartments. A carpeted ski-locker is built into the floor.
In the bow section, beverage holders are placed low and out of the way, as are the vertically placed handrails to maximize grip. A built-in ice chest is neatly concealed, and gunnel pads are positioned for comfort.
A stylish helm greets the driver with a tilt steering wheel boasting a carbon-fiber lookalike inlay to match the instrument panel. Highly visible Faria gauges follow the curves of the dash.
The integrated, anti-slip swim platform is wide and easily accessed by a lift-up swim ladder. Centred directly below the platform is MerCruiser’s Alpha drive, recessed into the hull. The transom is actually notched, and the visual afterplane effect is actually the back of the hull.
The bottom incorporates a single set of narrow lifting strakes and a wide, level chine angle. While many manufacturers use turndown chines to help boats plane, the 180 BR planes fast enough without it. The spirited MerCruiser pushed the moderately shallow 19-degree deadrise hull to its top speed of 50 mph in only 15.82 seconds.
Water and wind conditions were atrocious the day of our test. Two- to three-foot waves were whipping up and the temperature hovered around 5 degrees C. I commenced our test with the Sunbrella top up. But the high-profile convertible top and structure were taking a pounding so I removed it to complete the high-speed runs.
Finding some calm water, I literally threw the boat around and turned hard at high speed. The hull slides, rather than digs in, all part of Celebrity's Hydro-flow Hull design. Still, the 180 BR tracks straight, steers easily and responds immediately to steering commands. I ran effortlessly through a make-shift slalom course at top speed, trimmed level.
Celebrity uses quality construction materials and offers a limited lifetime
warranty on floors, stringers, motor mounts, joints and transom. Though well-built, the 180’s bottom is not de-signed to be pushed hard in rough water. It can handle a mild chop, even bigger waves at moderate speeds, but flat-out running through two-foot waves is not recommended.
Celebrity’s 180 BR is vis-ually futuristic and delightful to drive—spirited and fun. It’s priced well too—a value proposition for boaters everywhere.
