2001 Maxum 2500 SCR Description
The Maxum 2500 SCR Suncruiser is the spawn of the digital age, the offspring of CAD/CAM and a five-axis robotic milling machine. New technologies are accelerating the design process and allowing quick design improvements.
The result is a sharp-looking Suncruiser where just about every square inch of accommodation space has been utilized.
I had an opportunity to test the finished product, one of two prototypes of this new 2001 model, on the waters near Maxum’s Dock-L test platform at La Conner, Washington, with the company’s director of consumer  marketing Bill Penczak, ad development engineer, Craig McCallum.
The stylish lines of the 2500 reflect the subtleties of her bigger sisters, the 2700 and the 3500: the same rub strake molded into the glass, (providing strength and additional protection), the same handsome bow profile, the perky stern treatment with a moulded-in swim platform, the bold sheerline. The hull (17-degree deadrise and four chines) and CoreMax com-posite deck are stiffened by a complete liner pan.
The cockpit is a social area with a wet bar (unusual on a 25-footer), and a transverse seat that tilts automatically when you open the engine compartment hatch and folds out of the way for fishing.
The helm with full instrumentation in an aircraft style panel is to starboard. The seat folds into a bolster to make the boat more comfortable for steering in a standing position. The dash itself has brown gelcoat, to reduce glare.
Heading belowdecks, you go through a sliding companionway hatch, down two steps mounted on an aluminum post. Inside, a standup head, with Vacuflush marine toilet and shower, lies to starboard, a compact galley to port. A compact mid-cabin has been built beneath the sundeck, and thedining table drops down to provide sleeping accommodations for a couple forward.
Bill Penczak, an excellent measuring stick at 6'2", had standing headroom at the galley, and good seating headroom and legroom at the pedestal table. A lot of ergo-nomic living room has been designed into the cabin.
In the engine room, the carbureted Mercury MerCruiser 5.7 L leaves a surprising amount of space.
We took the prototype for a spin near Deception Pass, on an overcast day with a minimal breeze and a one-knot current running in the area.
Using a handheld GPS, we logged 3.3 knots at 1,200 rpm idling out the channel toward open water, then 12.7 knots at 3,000 rpm, 18 knots at 3,200 rpm, 20 knots at 3,400 rpm, 21.6 at 3,600 rpm, 23 at 3,800 rpm, 25.9 at 4,000 rpm, 28.4 at 4,600 rpm and 36.3 rph, at 4,800 rpm.
The ride was soft, quiet and responsive. Handling was sure-footed, and the sound level allowed conversations at normal tones, even at top speeds.
The accommodations, the 8'6" beam and the 5,800-lb dry weight all
suggest the 2500 will be as comfortable behind a sizeable tow vehicle as in
    a marina.
