2001 Larson 190 SE Description
Sometimes a boat gains a few extra miles per hour from a high-performance hull; sometimes a high-tech engine helps out. Every once in a while, both factors come into play.
That was the case with the Larson 190 SEI I tested last fall, powered by an Evinrude 135 FICHT outboard. The hull had designer Harry Schoell’s well-proven, patented Delta Conic hull for extra lift and faster planing; the Evinrude had FICHT direct fuel injection for great throttle response, as well as lowered emissions and better fuel economy.
In testing with the Stalker radar gun, the 190 SEI went from a standstill to 20 mph in 3.4 sec and from 0 to 30 mph in 5.6 seconds. While the boat is rated for 150 hp, the 135 ob-viously does an admirable job.
The hull has a sharp entry, helping it cut through all water conditions. This proved most useful as we encountered whitecaps during our test session. Putting the boat through a number of different manoeuvres, in both calm and rough water, the hull cut easily through the waves and tracked effortlessly, no matter how sharp the turns.
Finding some calm water in a bay I opened the throttle, reaching a top speed on the radar of 43.5 mph at 4,800 rpm. Cruising along at top speed the sound-meter read a very respectful 92 dbA in the aft area of the cockpit and 89 dbA at the helm.
Taking the boat for a ride down the lake, it cruised along effortlessly at 24 mph at 3,000 rpm and maintained plane as low as 2,200 rpm and 18 mph. That is a real testament to the Delta Conic design. I should note that all these numbers were achieved with three adults on board.
Speaking of passengers, the boat offers all kinds of seating. The open bow seats two adults comfortably. Under the cushions there are three storage compartments. There are moulded drink holders and stainless steel grab handles for convenience and safety. In the cockpit, the seating configuration of the test boat had two bucket seats in the front and a three-person bench seat aft.
The overall colour scheme combined beige carpet  with white upholstered seats sporting blue strips. There is a large storage area built into the floor to hold water skis or wakeboards; under the rear bench seat is an additional storage area. Behind the rear bench, securely mounted and attached to the boat’s structure, is an 18-inch ski-tow bar. There’s a new three-step boarding ladder on the integrated swim platform.
The instrument panel is comprised of a couple of multi-function gauges that incorporate speedometer, tachometer, voltmeter, fuel and trim indicators. The AM/FM cassette radio is also located at the helm station. On the passenger side, in front of the swivel bucket seat, moulded into the fibreglass, is a large locked glove box.
The cockpit has all the conveniences you could want in a cottage or day-cruising runabout; you can see most of it out in the open. What you can’t see, however – including the Delta Conic hull and FICHT technology – also combine to make the 190 SEI a better boat.
