2002 Maxum 4100 SCB Sport Yacht Description
Somewhere between the sleek lines of an express cruiser and the livability of an aft cabin lives the sedan bridge, and companies such as Sea Ray, Cruisers, Silverton and Carver have all targeted this sector of the market to showcase some of their best styling. But if one day you happen to be walking a dock and come across a sedan cruiser that makes you stop to take a long look, don’t be surprised if it’s not one of the aforementioned boats, but a Maxum.
Our test boat, the Maxum 4100 SCB Sport Yacht, impressed us as having a style somewhere between the radical “Euro” wedge shape and a more traditional North American cruiser. This design also gives the Maxum more window area and allows more natural light into the cabin.
One of the first things you experience with the Maxum 4100 SCB is how easily the moulded steps on both port and starboard sides of the cockpit facilitate boarding. Once aboard, moving along the side decks to get to the bow poses no problem as the 4100 SCB has sturdy handrails well positioned vertically as you step up from the cockpit and horizontally along the superstructure as you move forward.
Up on the foredeck the Maxum deserves high marks for the height and positioning of the bow rail and the texture of the non-skid surfaces. The Lewmar windlass with rope and chain locker to starboard and self-draining storage locker to port are all easy and safe to attend to because of the recessed bow area in which they they are situated.
The expansive flybridge has seating for six, a large sunpad and a refreshment centre. The helm is slightly offset to starboard, gauges are all in clear view and there is plenty of space on the dash panel to add electronics. Our test boat was equipped with Hynautic hydraulic controls, which are a treat to use.  Also worth noting was the good visibility from the helm, even with the well-fitted full canvas bridge enclosure in place.
Inside, the wide cabin door slides effortlessly. If you prefer fresh air, there is a sliding screen door. To take advantage of the cabin windows, Maxum has designed the main cabin level to include the salon, galley and dinette. The salon features an ultra-suede, U-shaped convertible sofa with large high-low table, and entertainment equipment. The port-side galley with hardwood floor includes two deep sinks, a three-burner ceramic-top stove, an under-counter microwave, a full-size dual voltage refrigerator/freezer and a coffeemaker. Opposite the galley, the raised dinette with soft leather cushions is large enough to accommodate four adults.
Three steps down, the head is to port and guest cabin to starboard. The guest cabin has twin berths that can be converted to a double. One more step down and you are in the master stateroom featuring his-and-hers cedar-lined hanging lockers, queen-sized island berth and plenty of natural ventilation.
While the 4100 SCB is available with gasoline engines, the torque provided by a pair of 370-hp Cummins diesels in our test boat seemed ideal. With the engines turning 2,400 rpm, the 4100 SCB cruised at 18 mph and had the boat up and on plane in a very respectable 8.86 seconds. Throttling up, we hit a top speed of 27 mph at 2,900 rpm. Straight-line tracking was very solid, turns were wide and stable.
The Maxum 4100 SCB blends unique styling, sturdy construction and solid handling into a boat that will surely attract attention for years to come.
